Physiological and Ecological Studies on the chinese Bellflower , Platycodon grandiflorum DC.)

Abstract
Results obtained from studies on seed germination, top and root growth and flowering habit of Chinese bellower are summarized as follow:
1. Percent germination of Chinese bellflower seeds was maintained higher than 95% until nine months after gathering, but it was lowered to 42, 9 and 0% after 12, 15 and 18 months, respectively. Treatment with GA, IAA, ethephon and sodium 5-mononitroguaiacol (Atoshin) as well as that with low temperature increased the % germination for the seeds not older than 12 months since gathering.
2. Stem growth and leaf area increase was more rapid before flower bud initiation than the afterwards.
3. Length, diameter, and weight of the one-year old roots were estimated as 78, 58, and 32%, respectively, comparing with the size of the two-year old ones. Removal of flower stalk increased the root size by 12.5, 10.7, and 14.8% in length, diameter, and weight, respectively.
4. The peak blossom was observed during a period from early to middle in August.
